RESPONSIBLE GAMBLING

Gambling should be entertainment,
not a financial strategy.

SportKen is a sports intelligence and analytics platform. We do not accept bets, hold funds, or operate as a bookmaker. We provide data-driven analysis to help you make more informed decisions — but no analytical tool eliminates the inherent risk of gambling, and past performance never guarantees future results.

Recognising Problem Gambling

Problem gambling can develop gradually and affect anyone, regardless of income, background, or intelligence. The following warning signs may indicate that gambling is becoming harmful.

💸

Chasing Losses

Continuing to gamble to try to recover money already lost.

🔒

Hiding Behaviour

Lying to family or friends about how much time or money is spent gambling.

😰

Emotional Dependence

Gambling to escape stress, anxiety, depression, or loneliness.

💳

Financial Strain

Borrowing money, selling possessions, or neglecting bills to fund gambling.

Loss of Control

Spending more time or money than intended, and being unable to stop.

🔄

Preoccupation

Constantly thinking about gambling, planning the next session, or reliving past wins.

🚫

Neglecting Responsibilities

Missing work, study, or family commitments because of gambling.

😤

Irritability When Stopping

Feeling restless, irritable, or anxious when attempting to cut back or stop.

Self-Assessment

This brief self-assessment is based on the Problem Gambling Severity Index (PGSI). It is not a clinical diagnosis — it is a private, anonymous tool to help you reflect on your gambling behaviour. Answer honestly for the most useful result.

1.Do you find yourself spending more time or money on gambling than you intended?

2.Have you ever tried to win back money you have lost gambling?

3.Do you borrow money or sell possessions to fund gambling?

4.Has gambling ever caused arguments or problems in your relationships?

5.Do you feel restless or irritable when you try to cut back on gambling?

6.Have you ever lied to family or friends about how much you gamble?

7.Do you gamble to escape problems or relieve feelings of helplessness or anxiety?

8.Has gambling ever caused you to miss work, study, or important commitments?

Safer Gambling Practices

If you choose to gamble, these practices can help you maintain control and keep gambling in its proper place as entertainment.

📊

Set a Hard Budget

Decide exactly how much you can afford to lose before you start — not how much you hope to win. Treat this as the cost of entertainment, not an investment.

⏱️

Set a Time Limit

Decide in advance how long you will gamble. Set an alarm. When it goes off, stop — regardless of whether you are winning or losing.

🚫

Never Chase Losses

Chasing losses is the single most destructive gambling behaviour. Accept that losses are part of gambling and walk away when your budget is gone.

🍺

Don't Gamble Under Influence

Alcohol and other substances impair judgement and lower inhibitions. Never gamble when your decision-making is compromised.

⚖️

Balance With Other Activities

Gambling should be one of many leisure activities, not the primary one. Maintain strong social connections, hobbies, and commitments outside of gambling.

🔧

Use Bookmaker Limit Tools

All licensed Australian bookmakers are required to offer deposit limits, loss limits, and self-exclusion tools. Use them proactively, not reactively.

🌿

Take Regular Breaks

Step away from gambling regularly — for days, weeks, or months at a time. This helps maintain perspective and prevents habitual behaviour from forming.

💬

Talk to Someone

If gambling is affecting your mood, relationships, or finances, talk to someone you trust. Gambling problems rarely resolve on their own without support.

Self-Exclusion Options

If you feel you need a break from gambling, self-exclusion is a powerful tool. All licensed Australian wagering operators are required by law to honour self-exclusion requests. You can self-exclude from individual bookmakers directly, or use Australia's national exclusion scheme.

BetStop — National Self-Exclusion Register

BetStop is Australia's National Self-Exclusion Register, operated by the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA). Registering with BetStop excludes you from all licensed Australian online wagering services simultaneously — you only need to register once. The minimum exclusion period is 3 months; there is no maximum.

Register at betstop.gov.au

Individual Bookmaker Self-Exclusion

You can also self-exclude directly from individual bookmakers via their responsible gambling settings. Most licensed Australian bookmakers offer instant self-exclusion through their account settings. Look for “Responsible Gambling” or “Account Controls” in your bookmaker's settings menu.
